On June 17, 1996, Mount Ruapehu erupted sending ash into the sky. This 4-kilometer Global Area Coverage (GAC) image from NOAA-14 shows the ash cloud blowing to the northeast for several hundred miles. Notice the snow in the mountains on the southern island of New Zealand.
