Hurricane Fran menaced the East Coast of the United States for several days in early September 1996. This NOAA-12 image is a 1-kilometer High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) resolution image which shows Fran east of the Bahama Islands early on September 4, 1996. The shadows that are cast just west of the hurricane's eye are due to the rising sun in the East. The map placed on this image is shifted slightly east due to a navigational error in the data.
