NOAA-14 passed over Southern California on October 21, 1996 to observe the brush fires raging west of Los Angeles. In this 1-kilometer Local Area Coverage (LAC) image, the smoke plume is clearly visible over the Pacific Ocean. The dark area at the origin of the smoke denotes a "hot spot".
