On September 28, 1985, NOAA-8 observed dense fog in the Appalachian Mountains. Warm air cools and moisture condenses to form fog. Cold air is more dense than the surrounding air and tends to "pool" in the mountain valleys. This is a 1-kilometer High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) image.
