GVI Sample Imagery
Plate Carrée Projection of Third Generation B-Level (weekly) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from February, May, August and November 1996. These Third Generation images, shown in color, depict the vegetated states. The dark green colors indicate dense, vigorous green vegetation and the yellow to brown colors depict less vegetated states. Note the permanence of the brown areas in the Southwest United States where the Mojave desert and the northern third of Africa where the Sahara desert is located. The dark green areas in South America indicate where the rain forests are located. Central Australia has little vegetation all year long. There is a line in all four images indicating the presence of the Himalaya mountain range in the east-west direction along the northern boundary of India. The area north of this range is generally much drier during the year than the area south of these mountains, indicating a strong orographic effect.
