2nd Generation Weekly NDVI - 1996, Mercator

This series of four images contain the Mercator projection of Second Generation Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from February, May, August and November 1996. The Second Generation images are in black and white only. The darker areas indicate dense, green vegetation, whereas the lighter areas are generally drier areas of the earth. This data is identical to the previous set of four, except it is displayed in the Mercator projection. Over the United States, the vegetation in the East and midwest are generally nonexistent in the February image. Once the growing season commences, the growing areas gradually darken up as seen in the May and August images. The August image is the greenest over the United States in August, indicating the height of the growing season. In the November image, the vegetation has begun to die out over the United States when compared to the August image in this series. Note the darker areas over India and Southeast Asia indicating the monsoon season has begun.
